Club Miroir, Rio Nightlife on the Lagoa

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – Posh new club Miroir is set to become the latest nightlife destination in Rio. Situated in the breathtaking surroundings of the Lagoa Rodrigo de Freitas and in direct view of the statue of Christ, this recent edition to Rio’s club scene has exploded onto the radar, attracting an elite and glamorous crowd.

The club, which is co-owned by popular Brazilian actor Luciano Szafir, is sumptuous in both design and setting, boasting the latest technical equipment that according to their press information, creates an ‘intimate, vibrant atmosphere rich in detail and decoration.’

Having opened on January 10th, Miroir has, according to club promoter Gisele Canavezzi, by no means reached the peak of its popularity. She admits that, “After two months it is still a little secret, and many locals do not know about [it]. This gives it an air of exclusivity, a place where only the coolest local people are attending.”

Amongst its many charms, Miroir benefits from regular appearances of some of Rio’s hottest up-and-coming DJs. Its regular weekend line-up features Fabio Tepper, Beto Giavonnetti, not to mention a wealth of celebrity fans such as singer Juliana Barbosa, along with model Carol Germano and actor Carlos Vieira to name a few.

Miroir also boasts a rich selection of dance music which never fails to impress the crowd, and ensures the club remains hip and different. This week, club-goers can start the weekend early with a trip to Miroir to see headlining dance DJs Kevin Barnett and Fabio Tepper taking to the decks on Thursday, March 22nd.

Alternatively, on Friday 23rd, Miroir will once again pull out all the stops with performances from equally chic DJs Kadinho + Zé Pretinho.

Miroir, whose full name ‘Miroir Magnifique,’ means magnificent mirror in French, endeavors to create an enchanting atmosphere which sets it apart from other clubs in Rio. The low, soft lighting and plush fittings and fixtures give an air of opulence that regular visitor Vinicius Marques believes is what’s responsible for drawing in the crowds.

Having been especially impressed with Lagoa’s new club, he says “ Miroir plays fantastic dance music and is full of beautiful people.”

Although Marques admits that the club is small, and some may consider it rather pricey, on the whole, he recommends a visit if only for the location and the music. “It has a beautiful setting and is decorated well so that it feels bigger than it is. People should certainly give it a try.”

With so many good reports so far, it is not hard to see why promoter Canavezzi anticipates a surge in popularity for Miroir, which, in her opinion, embodies the best of everything. She explains “the location, music, architecture, comfort and service are the best that any club has to offer. [Miroir] will definitely impress.”

Copacabana, Brazil

Police raid local night spots in Copacabana, including The Balcony and Dolce Vida, looking for drugs and underage females. Seven females were detained; two were found to be carrying the drug known as Cinderella, a knock out drug, used to incapacitate victims to be robbed.

The police surrounded the establishments, and forced the patrons to show identification, and the female's purses were searched. 


Not only are the adult entertainment spots dwindling in Copa, but apparently the few remaining locations are becoming havens for criminals.

When will the powers that be, allow a world class entertainment center to be constructed in Copacabana? Since the closing of Club HELP, two years ago, there does not exist in Zona Sul, including Ipanema and Copacabana one adult orientated establishment, in size or capacity, worthy of the world attention that Club HELP had enjoyed.

The question that begs for an answer is this is Copacabana a world class tourist destination or not. The official response has been lame and lacking in vision and purpose. They promised to build a museum of light and sound on the spot where Club HELP used to exist. Hardly the response that anyone understands or accepts, as the answer to the glaring problem, that there is nothing to do in Copacabana after dark.

If I were a tourist, that traveled eight thousand miles to visit Copacabana, and when I get there all that I can find for entertainment is an undersized restaurant, masquerading as a nightclub, I would demand a refund.

In the real world, the opportunity to reestablish Copacabana as a world class destination is undeniable, and as simple to do as ABC. Copacabana needs to build a world class disco, in size, entertainment and capacity for everyone to enjoy. Build it and they will come.

Studio RJ, a New Club Opens in Rio

RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – The former nightclub Jazzmania, which long ago occupied the upstairs of the beachfront Arpoador corner at Avenues Vieira Souto and Rainha Elizabeth, has reopened as Studio RJ. Affiliated with the São Paulo independent nightlife staple Studio SP, the Rio version is now a permanent fixture above Bar Astor after three consecutive summers promoting shows at other venues around town.

With an opening night show on September 27th that brought out musical celebrities like Caetano Veloso, Seu Jorge, and Hermano Vianna, Studio RJ is now into its first full month of live programming as the summer season arrives.

No better place to be, in that case, than in trendyArpoador with a marquee view of the ocean just to the side of Posto 8. Their smoking area, on a balcony overlooking the waterfront, boldly claims on a sign to be “the most beautiful in Rio”.

The club clearly intends to capitalize on the beach-going crowd by promoting a “pós-praia” (post-beach) party every Sunday from 7PM onwards.

The rest of the week, however, will be a healthy mix of live music and DJs, creating one of the few clubs versatile enough to handle such a diverse crowd. Tuesdays will be Jazzmania night, paying homage to the club that held court from 1983-1994.

Wednesdays will feature up and coming Brazilian bands promoted by independent music network “Circuito Fora do Eixo” (Off the Axis Circuit) in a series called “Cedo e Sentado” (Early and Seated), a rare phenomenon in Carioca nightlife.

Thursdays through Saturdays will borrow the Studio SP model of a show on the early side and DJs on the late side, with free admission to the party for those who came to the show.

“I think the doubled-up show plus party has all the right stuff to become one of the hits of this summer in Rio,” proffered Chico Dub, who is hosting his two-year-old party Dancing Cheetah at Studio RJ on Thursday, October 20th.

“Any venue that opens in Rio has my sympathy, as the city is notorious for having too few small and medium-sized stages. In the particular case of Studio RJ, they have both my sympathy and admiration,” Chico continued.

Mike Smith, a ex-New Yorker who lives in Ipanema explains: “It’s great to have more nightlife in Arpoador, the location – which is right on the border of Ipanema – is so beautiful and close to the beach, I’m surprised there has not been more happening there.”

Of course, a privileged location and a chic crowd doesn’t come cheap. While Wednesday nights are free (a huge incentive alone to check out Studio RJ), most shows or parties will set you back R$25-30 on the lista amiga (closed at 6PM the day of the event) or R$30-50 otherwise. Drinks start at R$7 for Bohemia orBudweiser.
