Happy Hour and Financial Planning Advice

Happy Hour and Financial Planning Advice

By Fiona Hurrell, Contributing Reporter
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – This Friday, December 2nd, the Gringo Café in Ipanema will once again play host to the monthly “Gringo Group Therapy” Happy Hour, along with co-sponsor The American Society of Rio de Janeiro (AmSoc Rio). The event, held on the first Friday of each month, has been steadily gaining momentum, with this week’s topic focusing on financial planning courtesy of guest speaker Howard Borsden of Looking for Dylan Financial Advisers.

In addition to their practical aspect, the Group Therapy nights provide the opportunity for socialization with like-minded individuals as well as the chance to meet new people in the community. The half-price drinks from 7-9PM are an added draw, bringing levity to some serious topics such as visa options and small scale business development in Brazil.
Gringo Café owner Sam Flowers considers such events to be extremely useful for any expatriate or traveler who may be in need of advice or commiseration.
He explains, “The meetings address a common need amongst foreigners in Brazil. There are so many ups and downs, it’s nice to know it’s not just you that is going through the various challenges. And it’s fun to share your insights and successes.”
Guest host Howard Borsden is a financial expert and CEO of Looking for Dylan, an Anglo-Brazilian company that specializes in personal wealth management for both international expatriates and Brazilians.
Borsden will offer insight into financial planning issues, regulations and risks, as well as opportunities. He is specifically keen to educate foreigners on how to recognize a reputable company from a non-reputable one, explaining, “Far too many expats are ‘sold’ inappropriate long term savings plans by so-called ‘financial advisers.’”

His advice comes at the right time, following therecent investigation of a U.S. based insurance company currently undergoing prosecution for selling life insurance policies without being legally registered in Brazil.
Although the discussion may touch on some serious topics, the venue provides a relaxed and friendly atmosphere which David Huffard, 2011 President of AmSoc Rio, believes creates the perfect combination.
“These meetings are gaining popularity with time, largely because of the relaxed and informal, on-the-sidewalk type of social networking environment they promote.” Huffard describes.
This informal, information-sharing environment is exactly the kind of setting that Flowers is keen to promote, his goal having always been to make the restaurant a “home away from home” for foreigners.
In addition to the Happy Hour special, the Gringo Café will provide a full bar service along with the regular dinner and appetizer menus. To find out more about the event on December 2nd from 7-9PM, visit Gringo Group Therapy on Facebook or Gringo Group Therapy Happy Hour on AmSoc Rio’s website.
AmSoc Rio has been in Rio de Janeiro since 1917 and continues to be a strong part of the community. The Society, which is member and sponsor-funded, provides community services and charity works as well as support for new arrivals.

Legalizing Rocinha and Vidigal Property

Legalizing Rocinha and Vidigal Property: Daily

By Brennan Stark, Contributing Reporter
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL – A reported 13,000 families throughout the Rocinha and Vidigal favelas will receive legal titles to their property in 2012.  An estimated one-third of all families in Rocinha and one-half of those living in Vidigal will have their properties regularized by the state Department of Housing.

Thousands of families throughout Rocinha will now receive much sought-after titles to their homes, photo by chensiyuan/Wikimedia Creative Commons License.
The announcement will provide relief to the thousands living in the favela communities who had faced prior eviction from or destruction their homes.
Over the years, many favela residents had purchased houses and land in subdivisions offered by landowning companies, but had received only a vague, promissory contract that did little to prove legal ownership of the property.
Ricardo de Gouvêa Corrêa, executive coordinator of the Bento Rubião Foundation, an NGO working for regularization in the favelas, explained the financial importance of full settlement:
“Studies show that when regularized, a property can be valued up to seven times, after a few years.  And the property can now be offered as collateral for loans, which facilitates the achievement of improvements in this property.” he said.
Under the new system, official property documents will be bestowed to any resident that can prove a minimum five-year tenure.
Residents are required to first demarcate their area, so that all neighbors and original owners may be identified.  The property documentation is then notarized and, if no legal conflicts persist, the legal title is then granted.

COPACABANA NIGHT SPOT RAIDED BY POLICE

LOCAL NIGHT SPOTS RAIDED BY POLICE
11/25/2011
Copacabana, Brazil

Police raid local night spots in Copacabana, including The Balcony and Dolce Vida, looking for drugs and underage females. Seven females were detained; two were found to be carrying the drug known as Cinderella, a knock out drug, used to incapacitate victims to be robbed.

The police surrounded the establishments, and forced the patrons to show identification, and the female's purses were searched.

Not only are the adult entertainment spots dwindling in Copa, but apparently the few remaining locations are becoming havens for criminals.

When will the powers that be, allow a world class entertainment center to be constructed in Copacabana? Since the closing of Club HELP, two years ago, there does not exist in Zona Sul, including Ipanema and Copacabana one adult orientated establishment, in size or capacity, worthy of the world attention that Club HELP had enjoyed.

The question that begs for an answer is this is Copacabana a world class tourist destination or not. The official response has been lame and lacking in vision and purpose. They promised to build a museum of light and sound on the spot where Club HELP used to exist. Hardly the response that anyone understands or accepts, as the answer to the glaring problem, that there is nothing to do in Copacabana after dark.

If I were a tourist, that traveled eight thousand miles to visit Copacabana, and when I get there all that I can find for entertainment is an undersized restaurant, masquerading as a nightclub, I would demand a refund.

In the real world, the opportunity to reestablish Copacabana as a world class destination is undeniable, and as simple to do as ABC. Copacabana needs to build a world class disco, in size, entertainment and capacity for everyone to enjoy. Build it and they will come.
